Abstract

The proliferation of private universities has necessitated the jostling for very scarce and qualified academics by management of Nigerian universities in a bid to satisfy their teaching and research needs. Consequently, the question of how to retain academics once employed by the various universities arises. In this paper, it was argued that universities management must endeavour to understand the determinants of organizational commitment, in order to achieve their retention plans. Administering questionnaires to about one hundred and twenty randomly selected samples out of a total of one hundred and eighty academics in a private university, this paper therefore seeks to analyze the extent to which certain demographic variables found in the literature of organizational commitment that can adversely or favourably affect Nigerian academics commitment towards their universities.
