The most important event which influenced all aspects of my life in my early years was undoubtedly the Second World War. It was this war which led to my direct personal interest in technical change and which probably changed the course of my life. The reason for this deep influence was that men like me, who were 18 or 19 years old at the time the war broke out, were waiting to make a decision on the question of which part of the armed services they would serve in. The first year or two of the war were dominated by the success of Hitler's armoured (Panzer) divisions in over-running first Poland and then Norway, Denmark, France, Belgium, Holland and the Balkans. In these campaigns the British Army was involved but with only rather weak armoured forces.
