Abstract

does not appear to serve an academic audience. It seems written mostly as a travelogue except for the chapter 4 on China's century-long struggle for modernisation (pp. 49-79). It opens the book by claiming: "Science and technology are blossoming in China. Europe is imploding" (p3). The authors add: "Concepts of Confucian (Chinese character) harmony wei ji (Chinese character) Lao zi and Dao etc., will become current western thinking." It goes on declaring: "European science and technology strategies, which may have worked in the past, will be largely irrelevant in the future". The authors then use the Clash of civilisations thesis and proclaim the future lies with how India and China work together or not. America and Europe are likely to tail behind.
