Abstract

In this paper, we decry the poor performance of African countries, with exception of South Africa and Egypt, compared to other countries in other parts of the globe, with respect to research and innovation generation. We describe a number of initiatives the authors have been involved in to create a culture and build sustainable African research and innovation capacity essential for the development of the continent. The paper ends by outlining how these initiatives could benefit the SIGCSE community and proposes three strategies to enhance Africa's research capacity: establish academic research networking and training; identify cognate fields from social and technical sciences with research programmes and research themes to create, acquire, build and use a body of knowledge for both the enhancement of research and quality training; and organisation of a number of books, journals and other publication that will be channels of scholars research ideas and also to provide immediate outlet in Africa. Finally, the paper highlights the likely impacts of these initiatives on African ICT and STI research capacity.
