Abstract

This Special Issue of the African Journal of Science, Technology, Innovation and Development (AJSTID) presents a development project conducted between July 2009 and December 2011 and lessons learned from running the project. The project was managed by UNU-MERIT, The Netherlands, with a team of four subject matter experts, the training team. It involved a Call for Proposals (see Appendix 1), adjudication of applications and mentoring of applicants on the margin, award of a small grant, management of four case studies by the successful applicants, a training seminar where initial results and challenges were presented, and a review seminar where the draft reports of the case study teams were presented and commented upon by case study team members and by the training team. The final phase was the revision of the reports, taking account of the input from the trainers acting as mentors and comments received following conference presentations. Final texts were published as working papers to the UNU-MERIT website (www.merit.unu.edu).
