This special issue is mainly concentrated in introducing research papers from the project about 'Building Capacity to Develop and Use Science/Technology and Innovation Indicators', which emanated with funding by the Canada's International Development Research Centre (IORC), and managed by UNUMERIT, Netherlands. The research papers are a result of four case studies where the authors searched for innovations where it is normally assumed they are not to exist, namely, in the informal economy. Grassroots and broad innovation, social innovation, inclusive innovation, user innovation and innovation in the informal economy appear to be the areas where the researchers concentrated to discover and make new findings, contributions, recommendations and evaluations. The purpose of the project was to undertake original case studies in sectors of the social economy where informality dominates.
