This project on how to build innovation driven economies in African countries was born of a scholastic and practitioner conviction that creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship are the keys to Africa's socioeconomic transformation. Research articles were invited that address these reflections and recommendations to practice communities (entrepreneurs, innovators, investors and policy-makers) based on rigorous African studies and analyses. The aim is to use this special issue to contribute to an important, Africa-wide, multi-stakeholder dialogue on innovation which has begun to gain focus. For the guest editors, this was also undertaken as a companion to a book project focused on case studies of innovation 'centres of excellence' on the continent.
