Abstract

I would like to thank the distinguished Professor Mammo Muchie, Editor, and the editorial board for allowing us to submit this special issue of this important scholarly journal. The papers presented in this issue are all a continuation of work presented at the 5th International Conference on Appropriate Technology (5th ICAT). All of the papers presented at the 5th ICATwere double-blind peer reviewed. After the conference, we invited the best presenters at the 5th ICAT to extend their work and submit a paper for review to . Each of the selected papers in this edition has been double-blind peer reviewed. While the six papers are diverse in their specific topics, they all relate to energy and environment. They are all efforts to analyse and/or recommend ways that appropriate technology can impact the environment and energy utilization. All of the authors have technical backgrounds in science and engineering. They have been engaged in research and practical application of appropriate technologies at universities and/or government agencies.
