Abstract

Kenya leads the world in mobile payments, sometimes called the mobile money capital of the world. Almost the entire adult population now uses mobile phones to send and receive money. Every day, M-PESA transactions in Kenya outnumber Western Union transactions globally. M-PESA has been an undeniable Kenyan success story, not because of the technology, but because of the transformative effect of the low cost technology running on any phone subscribed to the service. The concept may have been born in Cambridge, UK, but the execution by the mobile operator, Safaricom, in Kenya has been incredible, the adoption of the service exponential and the impact of the usage substantially felt by all users.
