Abstract

As depicted from the title, Li Anshan's book is a succinct account of the presence of the Chinese in Africa up to the beginning of the 20th century. Li Anshan shows in this book that it must be appreciated that research into the history of the overseas Chinese in Africa, unlike in other continents, is 'still very weak'. However, of late there is a proliferation of books on China-Africa relations, especially on the post-independence period. This book, therefore, serves as a backdrop on which these later books ought to have been built. In this direction, therefore, this book ought to have been written earlier, if this were to be realized.
