Abstract

The fourth edition of the conference of the African Association for Rhetoric (AAR) was held in Nigerian on 26-27 July, 2012 at the Pan African University (now renamed, Pan Atlantic University) Lagos, Nigeria. This volume of the African Journal of Rhetoric has been themed accordingly because almost all the papers published herein were drawn from the pool of papers presented at the conference. Of critical importance to the Association's operations is the Award Night held at the Four Point Hotel by Sheraton, where six illustrious Nigerians were awarded the inaugural Honorary Fellowships. The names include: Chief Bola Ige ( award), Dr. Stanley MacEbuh ( award), Ambassador (Dr.) Christopher Kolade, Professor Pat Utomi, Dr. Wale Okediran, and Honorable Farouk Adamu Aliyu. These individuals have contributed immensely to the shaping of Nigeria's democracy, even though the negative forces still render some parts of the nation unstable. The Association adopts a non-partisan policy and this hopefully will reflect in its award tradition going into the future. Four distinguished members of four political parties were invited and only three were able to attend. Some of these actually presented keynote and plenary addresses.
