The average South African producer price increased by 37% from July 2006 to July 2007 - the highest increase in the last decade. The sharp increase in producer prices has resulted in the mistaken belief that farmers are suddenly much better off and that milk production will increase sharply. One secondary spokesperson even predicted "rivers of milk" by September. This did not happen and periodic shortages are still with us.
