Heat stress often induces a drop in dry matter intake (DMI) of up to 50%. Cows reduce DMI in order to reduce heat production resulting from digestive and metabolic actions. When DMI decreases, the nutrient requirements for active cooling processes increase and this reduces the availability of nutrients for milk production.
