Abstract

South African dairy cattle breeds are mostly cool weather animals of northern hemisphere origin, that are particularly susceptible to hot humid conditions. Dairy cows' behavioural response to heat stress is to avoid the source of the heat by seeking shade, extending their limbs and wallowing in mud. They reduce their food intake and consequently lower their productivity.
