Mastitis can be caused by a variety of pathogens. The largest percentage of cases by far is caused by bacteria, although other types of micro-organisms, including mycoplasmas, yeasts and even algae, can cause intramammary infections. Infections may be clinical or sub-clinical, depending on the degree of inflammation and other signs.
