Abstract

Well-preserved silages are generally characterised by low pH and high ratio of lactic acid to other volatile fatty acids (principally acetic acid and propionic acid) : A low pH (dependent on dry matter levels within the crop) gives rise to chemical stability, but is no indication or guide as to the aerobic stability of the silage.
