Abstract

According to Sansor statistics, 2 378 tons of sorghum seed were planted for pastures in South Africa in 2007. A further 167 tons of babala or pearl millet, were also planted. This translates, at an average sowing rate of 30 kg/ha, into roughly 100 000 ha of land used. A lot of money is spent on these pastures, but there is still a lot of confusion about types and varieties. Sorghum varieties do not have to be listed on the South African Variety List.
