Abstract

The somatic cell count (SCC) of milk is as important an issue for milk producers as it is for the rest of the dairy value chain. Quality dairy products can only be made from quality milk. A concentration of somatic cells in excess of 500 000 per ml of milk, is generally considered indicative of mastitis in the herd. Milk from cows in late lactation or suffering from some form of udder infection, injury or a milking machine malfunction, will bring about an increased number of somatic cells.
