n The Dairy Mail - Cobalt - improving the feed efficiency of dairy cows

Abstract

Dairy cattle are wonderfully capable of converting highly fibrous feeds and forages into milk. However, within the rumen, forage digesting bacteria require a balance of nutrients for optimal growth and digestion of feed ingredients. A key nutrient in this process is cobalt. Cobalt is unique in that it is only required by rumen microbes for the synthesis of vitamin B12. Therefore, enhanced cobalt availability helps improve fibre digestion, leading to more efficient milk production and ultimately more milk per cow.
