Abstract

The presence of mould does not always mean that mycotoxins are present. Conversely the absence of moulds does not guarantee the absence of mycotoxins, as the toxins may be present long after the moulds have expired. Mycotoxins are highly soluble in water, so do not allow rain to wash through the top spoilt layers of silage, as this will spread the mycotoxins further into the silage.
