The two most prominent diseases tested for in milking herds are bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis. To determine the prevalence of brucellosis, the so-called milkring test (MRT) has been used for many decades to perform this task. Mounting concern about the reliability of the MRT, recently prompted state veterinarians in the Western Cape to also use blood tests every two years in addition to MRT results.
