Abstract

Recent participants in the London Olympic Games are busting a gut about funding an international campaign against malnutrition or what on our continent may be termed endemic famine. At least David Cameron, the British prime minister, is putting some of his aid where it might really make a difference - the breeding of drought-resistant crops. The University of Cape Town in South Africa, which did some pioneering work with maize, may be a good place to start.
