Abstract

Every good farmer can do this simple calculation: correct planting depth = good germination. And ever since Jethro Tull developed a horse-drawn seed drill in 1701 that sowed seeds in neat rows, farmers have been looking to mechanisation to ensure successful germination of seed. Prior to Tull's invention, seed was broadcast by hand onto ploughed and harrowed ground resulting in uneven distribution and wastage of costly seed.
