The modern dairy cow is without a doubt one of nature's remarkable success stories. Cows have the ability to convert roughage to food suitable for human consumption. They have been doing this for ages and could be considered the mother of humankind. Present-day dairy cows produce on average 7 200 kg of milk over a 10-month lactation period. This amount converts to 225 kg of high-quality protein, 254 kg of fat and about 50 kg of minerals.
