Abstract

Effective input and output management of a herd can have a huge effect on a farmer's profits. Over the past five decades, production of milk per cow and per farm in South Africa has increased dramatically. The number of milk producers is dwindling and the remaining farmers have recognised the importance of their herd's performance. The increase in milk production per cow has been supported by mechanisation, increased supply of high-energy feeds, fine-tuned rations and specialised genetics strategies.
