Abstract

Livestock farming can generally be divided into intensive and extensive systems. Extensive systems imply the use of naturally occurring forage or veld. Intensive systems, as the name suggests, usually involve the use of artificially planted pastures, intensively managed and utilised for an identified purpose. While there is potential for higher returns, the financial investment is substantial and unavoidable, which means that each decision and its effect on profitability must be carefully weighed.
