Abstract

Forgetting the past is no way to aim for the future. The foundations laid in the past and used to their full potential in the present will form the future. Baldinnie Jerseys, a farming enterprise in KwaZulu-Natal, was started with five in-calf heifers imported from Jersey Island in 1948. These heifers and their progeny formed the nucleus of the herd. Two bulls, born from the original five heifers, were used to grow the herd, and for the next 30 years the herd remained a pure Jersey Island herd. The progeny were sold far and wide to various Jersey farmers.
