Abstract

Not all so-called ''price cuts'' are as genuine as they might appear to be. Some folk believe that prices are first marked up, before being cut to just above the last benchmark. The ''cut'' then assures that the mark-up over actual cost, remains much the same. Other items are used as ''loss leaders'' to tempt customers into spending these illusory ''savings'' on other tempting, but more expensive items.
