Abstract

South Africa experienced an outbreak of the H5N2 notifiable avian influenza (NAI) in ostriches in 2004 in the Eastern Cape Province. The Department of Agriculture embarked on an extensive culling operation in which a total of 26 454 ostriches were destroyed.
