Abstract

The embryonic biodiesel industry has an excellent opportunity to involve emerging farmers as crop producers and at the same time fulfilling black economic empowerment imperatives in a positive way. Addressing delegates attending a biofuels conference in Johannesburg recently, National African Farmers' Union (NAFU) President, Motsepe Matlala, said that South Africa with its agricultural potential must regard biofuels as a commercial opportunity for farmers who are faced with low rainfall, high input costs and an unfavourable market that, at times, get flooded by cheap agricultural imports.
