Abstract

Drought conditions led to about 7,63% more animals being slaughtered in 2015 than in 2014. This means that 207 664 more heads of cattle were slaughtered in 2015 than in the previous year, as producers had to market more animals due to the prevailing dry conditions. More cattle were also slaughtered on a month-to-month basis than in 2014. As far as sheep were concerned 2% more were slaughtered in 2015. However, from October to December 2015 fewer animals were slaughtered - 6,98% fewer sheep were slaughtered. The beef:maize price ratio has been under pressure in recent months due to higher maize prices. In addition, hominy chop prices have also increased significantly since 2005. The difference in the beef:chop price ratio and the beef:maize price ratio has declined.
