Abstract

The Beef Genomics Programme (BGP) was established in 2015 with funding from the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), an implementing agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Industry co-funds the programme through various activities. The intention of the programme is threefold: to ensure accurate measurement of phenotypes on traits of economic importance in beef production (e.g. traits associated with quality of beef); to combine such phenotypic data with genomic data to further enhance the accuracy of prediction of breeding values of the local beef herd; and subsequently to use such enhanced breeding information to increase the competitiveness of the beef industry (a long-term objective). In the first year, steady progress has been made.
