As South Africa is a big market for Namibian weaners, this could result in a shortage of weaners in the domestic market, which will add support to weaner prices. The South African weaner calf prices at the beginning of the year were around R17,50/kg. These prices have strengthened by 17% to R20,53/kg in August 2016. Prices are expected to remain supported, and might reach record highs of R25/kg. However, the opposite is true for Namibia. Weaner prices averaged N$19,41/kg during the first three months of the year, and prices have declined to an average of N$15,64/kg during the month of July. This declining trend in weaner prices continued, with further price decreases recorded during the month of August. The number of animals offered at auctions is reported to be at its lowest. This situation has been exacerbated by the current drought in Namibia.
