Abstract

South Africa exported 46,1 million kg of wool worth R2,95 billion in the 2014/15 wool season. Almost 70% of the exported wool ends up in China or Macau (Cape Wools SA). These statistics confirm that wool is an important earner of foreign exchange; however, the wool industry is completely dependent on the country's animal health status. Wool exports can cease in an instant in the event of disease outbreaks such as foot-and-mouth disease and Rift Valley fever.
