Abstract

The wool auctions are part of the free market system and market forces such as demand and supply determine the price paid for the wool. South African wool production amounts to less than 3% of world Merino wool production. It therefore has little influence on the price of wool, which means that South Africa is a price taker. The price of apparel wool is determined in Australia, where the largest volumes of apparel wool are sold. Since about 98% of the clip is exported, exchange rates also play a role in the price the farmers receive.
