Abstract

The World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Report of 2016/2017 (WEFGC report) rates South Africa 135th - out of 138 countries - in terms of hiring and firing practices. Considering the vast amount of legislation regulating labour relations in South Africa, it is crucial for the employer to follow the correct procedures to the letter. This is especially the case when dismissing an employee, which the WEFGC report clearly shows is already a challenge. In view of the challenging labour environment, it is important to manage labour risk efficiently by appointing suitable employees.
