Abstract

Geographical renaming is as old as humanity and occurs throughout the world. One of the earliest references to this phenomenon appears in the Bible in Judges 18:29. In this article the most important causes of renaming are mentioned and illustrated with details of a number of countries and cities that have gone through the process or find themselves in the centre of it. The etimology of a number of these geographical names are included since it often throws light on the reason for renaming. It is concluded that geographical renaming is a widespread phenomenon over many centuries and that this process, therefore, is not unique to South Africa.
