Abstract

The purpose with this contribution is to revisit contemporary Xhosa anthroponymy, ie the names and naming systems of people, to see if any significant shifts have taken place over the last three decades. Unlike naming in a Western context, where great pride is often taken in choosing unique and unusual names, naming among the Xhosa people is firmly entrenched in culture. Add to this the meaningfulness of Xhosa personal naming, and it becomes clear that creativity is limited and names are often replicated. Various influences deriving from changes to our society and the world around us may impact on traditional practices, and so also with the practice of naming. Bearing an English name appears to be in the spotlight and there seems to be a trend of discarding the English name in favour of a Xhosa one. However, Xhosa society is divided on this issue. The concept of identity is also explored.
