Abstract

A certain degree of tension resulting from the name-changing process has arisen in South Africa, in view of successive name-changes, particularly since these changes are taking place against the background of the transition from a predominantly white National Party government, to a predominantly black African National Congress (ANC) government, representing different cultures and leitmotifs. The decision to change the name of the main access route to South Africa - the Johannesburg International Airport - in order to rename it after Oliver Tambo, the deceased president of the ANC, elicited widespread public reaction, negative as well as positive. The article endeavours, mainly on the basis of reportage in the printed media, to provide an overview of the relevant events, as well as of the arguments for and against name-changes. In conclusion, the actions and arguments relating to the name-changing process will be evaluated.
