Abstract

Changes of place names in South Africa is an emotive topic. One argument in support of change is that it occurred frequently in the past, and especially after 1948. The process of name changing in five historical political dispensations is investigated: since 1652 with the permanent settlement of Westerners at the Cape; from 1795 to 1803 with the temporary, and from 1806 with the permanent British occupation of the Cape Colony; from 1910 with unification; from 1948 when the National Party came to power and, lastly, from 1994 when the African National Congress became the rulers. Only since 1994, more specifically after 2000, a definite orchestrated process of name changing occurred. In this period name changing is used as an empowerment tool, and Africanisation of place names as a symbolic resource that contributes towards decolonisation, thus as part of the political transformation.

Pleknaamverandering in Suid-Afrika is 'n emotiewe onderwerp.
