Abstract

<b>The world's insatiable desire for inversion : the farmhouse, labour and ethnic mobilisation in &lt;I&gt;Bywoners&lt;/I&gt; (1919) by Jochem van Bruggen</b> As brief as a novella, and published years before D F Malherbe's <I>Die meulenaar&lt;/I&gt; (1926) and C M van den Heever's <I>Op die plaas&lt;/I&gt; (1927) - generally cited as the first Afrikaans pastoral novels - &lt;I&gt;Bywoners&lt;/I&gt; (1919) by Jochem van Bruggen nevertheless shares many of the characteristics of the pastoral novel. This article focuses on Van Bruggen's portrayal of the milieu: the representation of the farmhouses of the time and the spatial situation of houses and other farm buildings. It demonstrates that both this portrayal and its socio-critical implications are firmly anchored in the narrative. The depiction of labour and ethnic mobilisation is also examined in this regard. In conclusion, it is argued that Van Bruggen's socio-critical and hence didactic objective in writing <I>Bywoners</I> was to effect a change in the mentality of the impoverished Afrikaners of his day.

&lt;I&gt; Bywoners&lt;/I&gt; (1919) deur Jochem van Brugen toon heelparty tematiese kenmerke van die plaasroman, hoewel dit novelle-agtig kort is en 'n hele paar jaar vroeër verskyn het as D F Malherbe se <I>Die Meulenaar&lt;/I&gt; (1926) en C M van den Heever se <I>Op die plaas</I> (1927) - twee werke wat in een asem genoem word as daar sprake is van die eerste Afrikaanse plaasromans. In die artikel word veral gekonsentreer op die ruimtebeelding in <I>Bywoners</I>: die manier waarop destydse boerewonings voorgestel is; die ruimtelike plasing van huise en opstalle; die verankering van hierdie uitbeelding asook die sosiaal-kritiese implikasies daarvan in die verhaalopset. Die uitbeelding van arbeid en etniese mobilisasie kry bykomend in hierdie verband aandag. As slotargument word aangevoer dat Van Bruggen se sosiaal-kritiese en gevolglik didaktiese oogmerke met Bywoners spesifiek gemik was op die verandering van die geestesgesteldheid van die verarmde Afrikaners van sy tyd.
