Abstract

The history of sports - in particular football - in Africa is intimately linked to the struggles for racial justice, national liberation and peace. Several of the leaders of the anti-colonial campaigns, as well as many founding fathers of independent Africa, were either prominent football players themselves or promoted the game in their quest for national unity and freedom. Largely overlooked by historians, "[f]ootball constructed a fragile sense of nationhood in political entities arbitrarily created by colonial powers and fueled Africa's broader quest for political liberation".
