Abstract

Death, destitution and despair - these words have come to describe the crisis in Sierra Leone for the last eight years. This paper attempts to explain the root causes of the conflict and the major players, and examines ways in which this crisis could be resolved. Background and Overview to the Conflict A civil war erupted in Sierra Leone in 1991 when insurgent forces, the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), launched attacks against the government of President Joseph Mamoh.
