n Conflict Trends - Consolidation of democracy in Africa : A view from the South, H. Solomon and I. Liebenberg : book review

Volume 2001, Issue 1
  • ISSN : 1561-9818

This book should be seen as a contribution to this vigorous debate about the nature and content of democracy in Africa. It consists of nine chapters and looks at various organs of society (for example, civil, state, military) to assess the extent to which they contribute to or hinder democratic consolidation. The first chapter, by Irina Filatova, traces the evolution of the African state and democracy's failure to take root on the continent. The 'misbehaviour' of most African states, as reflected in the phenomenon of coups and counter-coups, is regarded as one of the things that has hindered the path to democracy.
