Abstract

In most parts of Africa, and particularly in the Horn, armed conflicts and various natural disasters, such as drought, have 'collaborated' to cause the death and disruption of millions of lives. The effects of food insecurity are wide ranging. For example, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) estimated that by 2020, 25% of Africa's children will suffer from malnutrition - a condition that is already responsible for more than a third of the deaths of African children younger than five years of age.
