Abstract

The water wars debate has been raging within the academic and diplomatic world for about 16 years. Many scholars and practitioners are convinced that water will, in the future, lead to violent conflict in many parts of the world. Regions that are pronounced to develop 'water wars' include the Middle East and southern Africa. These two regions form part of some of the driest places on the face of the earth, with much of the Middle East being desert or semi-desert. In southern Africa, the Namib desert is one of the most inhospitable places.
