Abstract

Elections in Africa are not a modern occurrence - they can be traced back to the precolonial era. In many instance, the colonial period formally introduced elections, in one form or the other, to their colonial subjects. However, considering the fact that these elections took place within the parameters of colonial policies, African elections are more readily acknowledged within the post-colonial context. Many African states marked their new-found independence from colonialism through elections.
