Extracted from text ... TRENDS 4 s we settle into the twenty- first century, con- flicts on the African continent continue to pose a threat to the livelihood of all its inhabitants. These conflicts represent immense challenges in terms of the resources and human personnel to be deployed in conflict man- agement. The United Nations (UN) continues to play a vital role in enforcing peace on the continent; its role can be witnessed through the various peace- keeping missions that have been deployed to cri- sis- stricken areas - all undertaken with the hope of bringing about a sense of calm.
