Abstract

14 December 2000 is an important date in the history of the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). It is the day UNHCR is 50 years old, and Malawi joins other nations in the world to celebrate. It marks the occasion when the General Assembly adopted the Statute of the United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees in 1950. On 1 January 1951, the UNHCR office began to function and six months later (on 28 July 1951) the UN Convention relating to the Statute of Refugees was adopted. May I take this opportunity to pay tribute to the governments and member states of the UN who resolved to take concrete steps to address the global refugee problem.
