Abstract

Although preventive diplomacy efforts in Africa have had a chequered past, they are widely recognised as a cost-effective alternative to preventing conflict. The practice of preventive diplomacy has, however, come under fire by critics, who claim that its basic theoretical underpinnings do not hold water, and indeed, it has failed more times than it has succeeded. Africa's past experiences of preventive diplomacy efforts have, for the most part, proved unsuccessful, yet even with these failures valuable lessons have been generated which should inform future diplomatic efforts on the continent. This is the aim of this book: to capture the lessons learned from preventive diplomacy efforts.
